What tricks do scammers use in the housing market

  • The ideal rental offer: At first glance, everything seems perfect: location, rent, condition and amenities of the flat.
  • Providing a false identity: Scammers almost always use stolen identities and therefore have a strong interest in avoiding face-to-face meetings. They prefer to communicate via email, WhatsApp, Facebook, etc. and use fake passport copies. With the help of a draft rental agreement, they try to pass themselves off as the owner. To remain anonymous, they often use a foreign bank account in the name of a fictitious relative.
  • No viewings: You are prevented from viewing the property in person or online beforehand.
  • Scammers will become annoyed easily: If the person reacts angrily when you ask for more pictures, videos or information, it is often not a good sign.
  • Creating time pressure: You are told that you must act quickly to secure the offer. You are asked to make the first payments (deposit, first month's rent) in order to secure the property.
  • Data theft: Under no circumstances should you comply with requests to send a copy of your identity card or passport.
